77-year-old woman finds home for herself and her dogs after 15 days on Athens street

For 15 days, 77-year-old Dimitra slept on the sidewalk in Omonia, Athens, with her two dogs, Ruby and Wolf. She refused to leave them behind for a shelter, as no solution allowed them to stay together. After facing threats while sleeping on the street, she found a small, empty apartment and rented it using her pension for the deposit and advance rent.

The apartment is completely bare, lacking even a bed, refrigerator, or basic appliances. Electricity is not yet connected. Dimitra now requires assistance to acquire essential items and make the space a safe home. Her primary concern remains the welfare of Ruby and Wolf, whom she calls her "children."

Animal welfare organizations and volunteers have stepped in to support her. The "Street Fighters" association will cover the dogs' veterinary care and needs. According to the organization's president, Olga Gavaki, the dogs are in excellent condition and deeply attached to Dimitra. "Mrs. Dimitra needs help to furnish the home she managed to rent and pay for, but she also needs to know she has people by her side," Gavaki stated. "The goal is for this small house to become a nest for her and her two beloved dogs."

Dimitra endured 15 days of heat on a blanket on the sidewalk because she would not abandon those she considers family.
