80-year-old woman dies fleeing aggressive B.C. wildfire

An 80-year-old woman died while attempting to escape the rapidly expanding Bald Range wildfire near Summerland, British Columbia. The fire, which ignited Friday evening, exploded in size, forcing 20,000 residents in the Okanagan region to flee their homes. British Columbia Premier David Eby declared a provincewide state of emergency as wildfire services warned of explosive conditions.

Penticton RCMP reported that the woman, a resident of Meadow Valley, was leaving her home with a family member when she died suddenly. Police suspect the wildfire caused her death. The BC Coroner’s Service is now investigating the incident.

Superintendent Beth McAndie of the Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional RCMP detachment expressed condolences to the family, calling the wildfire a "deeply traumatic event." Officers are providing support to the grieving family, who have requested privacy.

The Bald Range fire has grown to an estimated 13,618.2 hectares, leading to five evacuation orders and four evacuation alerts. Reports indicate that homes and structures have been destroyed by the aggressive blaze.
