82-year-old woman honored with national filial piety award for caring for her 100-year-old mother

In Yilan, Taiwan, 82-year-old Chen Zhengzi has been recognized with a national filial piety award for her devoted care of her 100-year-old mother. Chen, who is an only child, has spent her life dedicated to her family, overcoming the hardship of her husband's death in middle age to raise four children.

Now, she continues her commitment to family by caring for her centenarian mother. Her mother became immobile after a hip fracture 10 years ago. Despite having domestic help, Chen insists on personally preparing five nutritious meals each day, ensuring her mother receives the best care in her final years. This dedication has become a local tale of devotion.

Beyond her personal caregiving, Chen Zhengzi has also been a pillar of her community. For 20 years, she served as a neighborhood chief, actively participating in local affairs and supporting vulnerable residents. Her lifelong virtues of steadfast family management and neighborly kindness have earned her this prestigious national honor.

The award ceremony also celebrated four other individuals from Yilan County as filial piety models. These included Wu Fuquan, who resigned from his job to care for his stroke-affected mother for 21 years while also serving as a neighborhood chief. Student Lan Yongting assists his father with a stall business after school, and Chen Xianghan volunteers while caring for her mobility-impaired grandmother. Yu Tingjie has balanced family responsibilities with his studies while his father faced difficulties after his parents' divorce.

Acting County Magistrate Lin Mao-sheng praised the awardees for their resilience and dedication, highlighting their selfless love and care for elders. He expressed hope that their stories would inspire others to practice filial piety and foster a warmer, more harmonious society.
