A Tribute to the Republic: 'Meradjoet Sendja' Blends Art and Social Concern

The Gedung Kesenian Jakarta recently hosted 'Meradjoet Sendja,' a performance presented as a 'Tribute to the Republic.' This event marked the culmination of the Bakti Seniman Nusantara program, a collaboration between PARFI ’56, Keana Production, and Dompet Dhuafa, which merges performing arts with a spirit of social concern.

The performance featured a nationalistic orchestration that revisited the history of Indonesia's proclamation of independence through artistic expression. The narrative of the nation's struggle towards independence was presented not just as historical recounting, but as an emotional journey for the audience. Directed by Olivia Zalianty, 'Meradjoet Sendja' unfolded across four narrative acts, guiding spectators through the atmosphere and dynamics leading up to the proclamation.

"The thoughts of the nation's founding figures as a liberation project, with their diverse ideas coming together to achieve independence, I think it is very fitting that we give a red carpet to the founders of the nation," stated Olivia Zalianti. The use of theatrical approaches and nationalistic orchestration aimed to make this historical event more relatable to contemporary audiences.

Art served as the medium to remember the values of struggle, sacrifice, unity, and love for the homeland. The performance in Jakarta also served as a significant moment within the Bakti Seniman Nusantara series, demonstrating that the arts stage can be a space for expression, entertainment, solidarity building, and mutual care.
