Abdi: If You Did Not Follow Party Procedures, Do Not Run in 2027

CCM leaders in Zanzibar who ignored party procedures or helped divide the organization should not seek office in 2027, Deputy Secretary-General Abdi Mahmoud Abdi said.

Abdi issued the warning on September 6 while meeting members of the Political Committee of Mkwajuni North constituency in Unguja. The meeting formed part of his tour to assess the party’s activity and performance.

He said constituency political committees are responsible for overseeing party work from ward and branch levels down to the grassroots. Leaders who fail to cooperate or follow decisions made by party meetings, he said, should be held accountable.

“Everyone is doing whatever they want. The party’s political matters must be discussed and approved by meetings. We must leave these habits behind and do our work according to the procedures we have established. If this continues, action will be taken,” Abdi said.

He was speaking ahead of the CCM internal elections expected next year. Leaders should assess themselves before seeking office, he said, particularly those who did not participate fully in party meetings or who chose sides early and split the organization.

“If you believe you did not contribute to the meetings of the constituency political committee, or if you chose a side early and divided the party, we ask that you do not run for any position,” he said. Abdi added that CCM needs leaders who take responsibility for their positions rather than officials who use authority for personal interests.

He said national leadership would supervise the coming elections not only at district and regional levels, but also down to the grassroots. Members should choose leaders freely and based on ability, rather than following instructions from lawmakers, representatives or other officials. Abdi also said he and members of the national special committee secretariat accompanying him would not favor leaders found to have violated party procedures.
