Abierto de Los Cabos Fuels Next Generation of Mexican Tennis Amidst 30-Year Top 100 Singles Drought

For over three decades, Mexican men's tennis has yearned for a representative within the elite ATP Top 100 singles rankings. Luis Enrique "La Araña" Herrera was the last to achieve this feat, reaching a career-high world No. 49 in October 1993. His absence has left a void, yet the passion for tennis in Mexico remains vibrant, a sentiment echoed by José Antonio Fernández, director of the Abierto de Los Cabos.

"The fanbase has been growing, which is incredible because we don't have a Mexican in the Top 50 or Top 100. For many years, we haven't had one in that ranking. The fans are extremely loyal, so they play a fundamental role," Fernández explained in an interview with EL UNIVERSAL Deportes. He noted the tournament's journey from Acapulco to Los Cabos, emphasizing the sustained support.

Fernández highlighted the Abierto de Los Cabos' role as a vital platform for Mexican tennis, integral to a project aimed at nurturing young talent. Since last year, the organizing company Mextenis has collaborated with the Mexican Tennis Federation and the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE) to foster national talent through the newly established Junior Tennis Cup circuit.

"It means a great deal for the country to put Los Cabos and Acapulco on the map. Being able to work hand-in-hand with the Mexican Tennis Federation speaks to consummating a project where we are talking about building tennis players," Fernández stated. "The issue of infrastructure is different; it's a matter for the Federation, but what we have built today is an important value for Los Cabos, a value for Mexico, and for all the events held in this great country."

While Mexico has yet to see another singles player in the Top 100 since Herrera, the country has found success in doubles. Santiago González reached a career-high ATP doubles ranking of No. 7 in November 2023. Both González and emerging talent Rodrigo Pacheco are set to compete together in doubles at the Abierto de Los Cabos, a highly anticipated moment for Mexican tennis fans.
