Abiodun orders investigation as one dies in Ogun building collapse

A two-storey building collapsed in Ogun State, Nigeria, killing one person and leaving others traumatized. Governor Dapo Abiodun has ordered a comprehensive technical investigation into the incident that occurred in Ifo Local Government Area.

The building collapsed on Monday afternoon during a heavy downpour and thunderstorms. Preliminary findings indicate a catastrophic structural failure, with the lower floors sinking into the ground and parts of the upper slab remaining visible. Eyewitnesses reported the collapse happened around 3:00 p.m. after intense rainfall and a reported lightning strike.

Several individuals narrowly escaped the collapsing structure. Two women and their children fled after noticing signs of distress, and a young man sustained minor injuries while escaping just before the collapse. Emergency responders from multiple state agencies, including the fire service and physical planning departments, along with local contractors, quickly mobilized to the scene.

Despite initial searches not immediately locating victims, traces of blood and footprints beneath the rubble led to a coordinated excavation. This effort recovered one deceased victim, whose identity remains unconfirmed. Experts on the investigation team stated that the precise cause could not be determined at the scene. A detailed structural, geotechnical, and forensic investigation is required to ascertain if the collapse resulted from foundation failure, soil instability, construction defects, or substandard materials.

Governor Abiodun expressed deep sadness and offered condolences to the deceased's family and sympathy to those affected. He directed specialists to conduct thorough assessments of the collapsed structure, evaluate soil conditions, examine construction materials, and inspect adjacent buildings for potential structural compromise.
