Abu Bakar to be sacked as Perlis Bersatu chairman?

Abu Bakar Hamzah is reportedly facing dismissal as the Perlis chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) following his recent resignation from the party's Supreme Council (MPT). Sources indicate that his deputy, Izizam Ibrahim, who also serves as a state executive councilor, is poised to take over the chairmanship. However, Abu Bakar's role as Menteri Besar is anticipated to remain unaffected until the end of the term.

The anticipated dismissal stems from Abu Bakar's decision to step down from the MPT. This move, along with the departure of the state Bersatu Secretary Azahar Hassan from the party, was recently reported. Abu Bakar stated his MPT resignation was to focus entirely on his duties as Menteri Besar with about a year left in the state legislative assembly's term.

Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has acknowledged the resignations, asserting that the party remains "strong and united." He mentioned that he would obtain a full report before commenting further. Muhyiddin emphasized that despite these resignations from the top leadership, the individuals officially remain Bersatu members, and internal matters would be resolved privately.

Abu Bakar himself acknowledged the possibility of his dismissal as state chairman, stating that the decision rests with the party president. "The possibility exists (of being dismissed as Perlis Bersatu Chairman). I leave it to the President; it is his personal right whether to keep me or not," he said.
