Abuja traffic grinds to halt as thousands attend NDC convention; party zones 2027 ticket to South

Vehicular movement was brought to a standstill, stranding motorists for hours and spilling onto adjoining roads. The scene was further enlivened by supporters from various movements, including the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient Movements, who danced and sang solidarity songs, adding to the vibrant, if chaotic, atmosphere.

Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient Movements were also seen dancing, chanting solidarity songs and jubilating around the venue, forcing guests and motorists to struggle through the crowd to gain access.

Beyond the immediate disruption, the convention marked a significant political development: the formal zoning of the NDC's 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria. This decision, unanimously backed by delegates, is a strategic move aimed at reshaping the opposition political landscape ahead of the next general election. It is widely seen as a boost for potential southern aspirants, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, within the emerging opposition coalition.

The NDC formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, a decision widely seen as a major move capable of reshaping opposition politics ahead of the next general election.

The resolution was adopted during the party’s National Convention in Abuja after delegates unanimously backed a motion moved by the member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, Afam Victor Ogene.
