Activists reject reassignment of officers to renewed Mohbad death probe

The renewed investigation into the controversial death of Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has hit a snag as a prominent civil rights organization, the United Advocates Group (UAG), voices strong objections to the police officers assigned to the case. The UAG's rejection of two officers from the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department signals a deep-seated concern for transparency and public confidence in the ongoing inquiry.

The death of Mohbad is not an ordinary matter. It is a matter of profound public concern. It has raised serious questions about justice, accountability, institutional responsibility, and public confidence in law enforcement agencies.

Mohbad's death at the young age of 27 on September 12, 2023, sent shockwaves across Nigeria, igniting widespread public outrage and demands for justice. The Lagos State Police Command's establishment of a special investigative team was seen as a crucial step, but the UAG's statement on Thursday casts a pall over these efforts. The group's insistence that the investigation must be handled by officers whose impartiality is beyond question highlights the high stakes involved.

For this reason, any officer assigned to the renewed investigation must not only be impartial but must also be seen by the public to be impartial.

According to the UAG's counsel, Leke Odugbesan, the concerns are not unfounded. Allegations of one officer's failure to diligently pursue critical leads and even ignoring a subpoena from the Coroner's Court during the initial probe are particularly damning. Furthermore, inconsistencies in the second officer's communication regarding his involvement raise serious questions about accountability and integrity. More troubling is the fact that when the officer’s presence and cooperation were most needed, he was unavailable. His absence was so consequential that a subpoena had to be issued against him. Yet, despite the subpoena, he failed to appear before the Coroner’s Court until the conclusion of its proceedings.
