After Trump, Eyes on London: Poland Seeks Permanent Seat at G20 Table

Poland is strategically using its current access to G20 meetings, facilitated by the United States' presidency, to lobby for a permanent seat at the table of the world's major economies. Finance ministers and central bank governors are gathering for crucial talks, with Polish officials Andrzej Domański and Adam Glapiński in attendance.

While the U.S. has been a vocal proponent of Warsaw's G20 ambitions, the group's leadership will pass to the United Kingdom after the December summit. This transition raises questions about whether London will maintain the same level of openness to Polish participation. The Polish government views its current involvement as vital for shaping global economic order and ensuring Central and Eastern Europe has a voice in decisions affecting the region.

We want Poland to co-create the rules of the world order, not just be a recipient of these rules. If we weren't sitting at this table, we would bear the consequences of decisions without the possibility of expressing the position of Central and Eastern Europe.

Discussions are ongoing with British officials, including the Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey. While the UK's Foreign Office has acknowledged Poland's growing international significance and U.S. support, formal confirmation of Poland's participation in 2027 remains pending. Poland hopes to build consensus to secure its place in the group's future work.

Beyond diplomatic maneuvering, Poland's strategy hinges on strengthening its economic and political standing to earn a permanent G20 membership. Minister Domański emphasizes that consistent engagement and contributing a significant voice from Poland and the region are key to achieving this goal, rather than relying solely on external support.

We are working to make this happen. I am counting on building a consensus that will ensure our participation in the group's work next year. Poland is an important country for Great Britain, our position in the EU is growing, and London is looking for strong allies in EU countries. And we are building our talks on this.
