Agony for 74-year-old missing in Crete - Video documentary of her last movements before her tracks were lost

Anxiety is mounting in Crete, Greece, as the search intensifies for a 74-year-old woman who has been missing since Friday afternoon. The woman, who suffers from dementia, disappeared from the Symi Viannou area in southern Heraklion. The high temperatures in the region add a critical urgency to the ongoing search efforts.

Search teams, comprising strong forces from the Fire Service and Hellenic Police, supported by drones and a specialized dog, have been meticulously combing the area. Operations focused on the Blavopotamos river, the Pefko area, and surrounding mountainous regions. However, due to fading light and the dangerous terrain, the search was suspended on Saturday evening and is set to resume at first light on Sunday.

Compelling new video evidence has emerged, showing the missing woman walking briskly towards the mountainous zone shortly before she disappeared. This footage is considered crucial for the investigation. Adding to the complexity, authorities are examining conflicting reports of a possible sighting in the nearby village of Pefkos, approximately 2 kilometers away. This reported location is in the opposite direction of where the video footage places her, raising questions and prompting investigators to explore all possibilities.

Adding a poignant detail to the search, footprints believed to belong to a woman's shoe, size 36, were discovered in a difficult-to-access area. These are consistent with the size reportedly worn by the missing 74-year-old, identified as Marianthe. Despite a thorough examination of the site, no further clues were found. The woman had traveled to Viannos with her son for a relative's funeral, which was subsequently postponed due to her disappearance. In her last known phone communication, she reportedly believed she was in Athens, not Crete, highlighting the disorientation caused by her condition.
