Aguascalientes Congress approves creation of 12th municipality, "Villa Juárez"

The Aguascalientes state congress has officially approved the creation of the state's twelfth municipality, which will bear the name "Villa Juárez." This significant legislative decision was achieved through a vote of 19 local deputies in favor, although seven legislators from the Morena party cast dissenting votes.

Morena's opposition was based on the argument that the proposed municipality does not meet the necessary demographic requirements for its creation. However, proponents of the measure, including deputy Arlette Muñoz Cervantes, asserted that the decision was supported by technical evidence concerning financial, fiscal, and demographic data, corroborated by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and other relevant authorities.

The decision made today by the deputies who voted in favor was based on technical evidence of a financial, fiscal, and demographic nature, also reported and documented by INEGI and authorities in the matter.

Currently, the community of Villa Juárez is part of the municipality of Asientos, located in the northern part of the state. Supporters of the new municipality believe its creation will boost industrial and commercial development and increase revenue. Deputy Beatriz Montoya Hernández, president of the Commission for Municipal Strengthening, noted that delaying this territorial change could risk the identity of Asientos, as Villa Juárez might become the municipal seat within a decade.

The proposal will now be sent to the ayuntamientos, or city councils, of the eleven existing municipalities in Aguascalientes. For the creation of Villa Juárez to be finalized, at least seven of these municipal governments must vote in favor. Following this, the State Congress will appoint a Provisional Municipal Council to oversee the administrative, financial, legal, and operational integration of the new municipality, with the first elections for its local government expected in 2027.

If this territorial change is not made now, in 10 years the municipal seat would change to Villa Juárez, which would put the identity of the municipality of Asientos at risk.
