Alberta investigators seize millions in drugs, cash, and guns

Alberta's organized crime unit, ALERT, announced a major bust on Thursday, seizing millions in drugs and cash. Investigators confiscated over $7 million worth of narcotics and $1 million in currency. The haul also included 17 firearms and eight vehicles. ALERT stated the amount of cash seized marks the largest in the organization's 20-year history. The investigation, launched in November 2025, involved a collaborative effort between the Edmonton Police Service, Calgary Police Service, and the RCMP. Search warrants were executed across multiple locations, including homes in Edmonton, Calgary, St. Albert, and Sturgeon County. Authorities allege that a province-wide drug trafficking network utilized vehicles equipped with hidden compartments to transport drugs and cash between Edmonton and Calgary. Among the seized items were significant quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and psilocybin mushrooms. The 17 firearms, including handguns and rifles, will undergo testing to determine their potential involvement in other crimes. ALERT will also work with the province's civil forfeiture office to explore the forfeiture of the seized cash and vehicles due to their alleged ties to drug trafficking and organized crime. While arrests have been made, no charges have been formally laid as the investigation continues.
