Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigates Calgary police shooting

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an incident where Calgary police shot a man, leaving him in critical condition. The man was later upgraded to stable condition after receiving medical treatment.

Calgary police were initially called to a home in the city's southwest early on July 30, 2026, regarding reports of a man discharging a bow and arrow in the backyard. Details regarding why officers were called earlier that evening have not yet been released by ASIRT.

Upon returning to the residence, officers located the man inside. ASIRT stated that the man was not permitted to be at the home or possess weapons. Despite repeated requests from officers for him to exit the house unarmed, he emerged about an hour later carrying a bow and arrow and moved toward the officers in the driveway.

In response, officers deployed a police service dog and fired both a less-lethal impact weapon and a service pistol in quick succession. Following the shooting, officers immediately administered first aid, and paramedics transported the man to the hospital. Calgary police are also pursuing criminal charges against the man related to the events that preceded the shooting, as part of a separate investigation.
