Algeria is making a bold statement on the global intellectual stage by inaugurating the first Afro-Mediterranean Encounters of Thought, an event that prominently features Saint Augustine. This initiative is more than a mere academic conference; it is a powerful assertion of Algeria's historical and cultural identity. By reclaiming Saint Augustine, a towering figure of universal philosophy born in Thagaste (modern-day Souk Ahras), Algeria underscores its deep roots in both Africa and the Mediterranean world. Minister of Culture and Arts Malika Bendouda officially reintegrated the philosopher into the national heritage, emphasizing his significance not just to Christianity but as an "African and Mediterranean child of Algeria." This move positions Algeria as a natural bridge between continents and cultures, a role it seeks to embody in contemporary intellectual discourse. The event, held under the patronage of President Tebboune, has drawn thinkers from both sides of the Mediterranean, all recognizing the enduring relevance of Augustinian thought.
