Algeria's Mining Sector: Structuring Major Projects Amidst 60th Anniversary of Nationalization

Today marks a significant milestone for Algeria as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the nationalization of our mining sector. This occasion is particularly resonant as it coincides with a period of remarkable investment and the realization of transformative projects that are set to position mining as a cornerstone of our economic diversification strategy. The nationalization in 1966, followed by the establishment of SONAREM, was a pivotal moment in our nation's post-independence development, laying the groundwork for harnessing our rich natural resources.

Under the current administration, the mining sector is receiving unprecedented attention. Significant investments are fueling new dynamics, with a focus on enhancing its contribution to the national economy. This revitalization is supported by a strengthened legal framework and dedicated institutional structures, including a new ministry specifically for mining. The recent completion of the Gara Djebilet-Tindouf-Béchar railway, a 950 km infrastructure marvel completed in a record 20 months, exemplifies this renewed vigor. This project is not just about exploiting the vast iron ore reserves; it's about integrating the vast South with the rest of the country, a vision championed by President Tebboune.

Further underscoring this commitment are the ongoing works at the Tala Hamza zinc and lead mine in Bejaïa, projected to yield substantial annual production and create numerous direct and indirect jobs. Equally ambitious is the Bled El Hadba phosphate project in Tébessa, which aims to propel Algeria into the ranks of leading global exporters of phosphate and nitrogenous fertilizers. The associated infrastructure, including a 450 km railway and port expansion at Annaba, demonstrates a holistic approach to resource valorization and export capacity enhancement. These initiatives reflect Algeria's strategic intent to leverage its mineral wealth for sustainable economic growth and global market presence.
