Alonso: Car is much better; it was just the first step, but we are heading in the right direction

Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion driving for Aston Martin, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the AMR24 car following significant upgrades tested at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite qualifying in 19th place, Alonso stated that the car felt "much better" and was "easier to drive," with improved predictability in cornering.

"This has only been the first step. There is still a lot of performance to find, both in the chassis and the engine. We are going step by step, but we are going in the right direction," Alonso commented. The Spanish driver, who is nearing 45, is experiencing a career resurgence and noted that the upgrades aligned with the team's expectations during the practice sessions.

Alonso anticipates that the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, following the summer break, will serve as a crucial test for the new engine components. He believes the team has potential to unlock more performance overnight, looking ahead to qualifying. The Hungarian Grand Prix holds special significance for Alonso, as it was the site of his first Formula One victory 23 years ago, marking his debut as the youngest driver and first Spaniard to win a race.

He also mentioned that the new settings might require adjustments compared to previous setups. Alonso, who is also a World Endurance Champion, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, is optimistic about the team's trajectory. The focus remains on incremental progress, with the team aiming to unlock further potential from both the car's chassis and its power unit.
