Amid crisis, Brazil’s Supreme Court reinforces security for Independence Day

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court will reinforce security around its Brasília headquarters for September 7, as an internal dispute between Justices André Mendonça and Alexandre de Moraes intensifies.

The court said the operation would follow arrangements used in previous years and at major events that could threaten its facilities. Planning involves the court, Brasília’s public security authorities, the Planalto Military Command, the armed forces, the Institutional Security Office, the Brazilian Intelligence Agency and other agencies.

The coordinated plan includes intelligence sharing, risk assessments and decisions on troop levels, areas of responsibility, searches, roadblocks, airspace restrictions and drone monitoring. The court said it would adopt “the necessary reinforcement measures” in areas under its responsibility.

The security arrangement has operated for several years and expanded after January 8, 2023, when the headquarters of Brazil’s three branches of government were invaded in an attempted coup. The plan for this year had already been developed before the current crisis inside the court.

Earlier in the week, Mendonça sent Chief Justice Edson Fachin a Federal Police report alleging an improper connection between Moraes and Daniel Vorcaro. Moraes then asked Fachin to open an investigation into Mendonça over alleged irregular procedures in handling the case.
