In a statement shared on his personal Instagram account, Pirlo expressed his sadness over the recent debates. He explained that his prior silence was a sign of respect for the institutions and individuals involved. "For the past few days, I have watched with great sadness the debate that has developed around my name and the possibility of taking on the job of coaching the Italian national team," Pirlo wrote.

Reports had indicated that the Italian Football Federation was considering Pirlo as a candidate for the national team's coaching position after other prominent figures declined the opportunity. However, the revelation of his ambassadorship for Fonbet, a Russian betting company, complicated matters. The controversy intensified when Pirlo attended an event in Moscow in May 2026, especially since gambling promotions are prohibited in Italy, drawing criticism.

Amidst the controversy, Pirlo was officially unveiled as the head coach of United FC, a Dubai-based club competing in the top division of the United Arab Emirates. Pirlo emphasized that all his professional activities adhere to the laws of the countries where he works. He also refuted claims that his collaboration with Fonbet carried any political undertones, stating that the partnership occurred while he was working in the UAE and was purely professional and commercial.
