Animal Welfare League urges hotels to go 100% cage-free on eggs

The Animal Welfare League (AWL) has launched a campaign urging hotel operators across Ghana to adopt 100% cage-free egg sourcing. This initiative seeks to significantly improve animal welfare standards within the hospitality industry's supply chain.

AWL's Corporate Campaigns Coordinator, Selorm Sikanku, stated that cage-free production systems allow laying hens more freedom to move, spread their wings, perch, and lay eggs naturally, unlike traditional battery cages where hens are confined. He emphasized that the hospitality industry, as a major buyer of eggs, has a substantial opportunity to influence farming practices through its procurement decisions.

"Millions of eggs are served by Ghana’s hospitality sector every year. Hotels have a real opportunity to lead on animal welfare, and we are giving them a final chance to show it before this year’s benchmark goes live," Sikanku said. The demonstration, held in Accra, aimed to raise awareness about the industry's role in reducing animal suffering by sourcing eggs from farms with improved welfare standards.

AWL previously launched Ghana's first hotel cage-free ranking platform last year. The upcoming 2026 Hospitality with Heart Awards Benchmark will honor hotels that publicly commit to responsible sourcing, transparently report their progress, and take measurable steps toward eliminating eggs from battery cage systems. The organization is providing a final opportunity for hotels to demonstrate their commitment before the benchmark is released.
