Anwar Praises Al-Azhar Grand Imam for Championing Moderate Approach

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has lauded the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University, Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, describing him as a prominent figure advocating for a moderate approach to contemporary issues.

It is an honor for me to express my deep appreciation to the Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, a figure of reform and an educator of this ummah.

Anwar highlighted Al-Tayyeb's enduring influence, noting that at 80 years old, he remains actively engaged in addressing diverse global challenges. The Prime Minister emphasized Al-Tayyeb's role in shaping understanding of faith, power, and coexistence in a constantly evolving world. Anwar's tribute was shared via a Facebook post from the official Al-Azhar platform, accompanying a book titled 'Di Mihrab Al-Tayyeb' celebrating the Imam's 80th birthday.

At 80 years old, Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb is still involved in issues that transcend any particular institution or time limit and shape our understanding of faith, power, and coexistence in a constantly changing world.

In his remarks, Anwar commended Al-Tayyeb's ability to uphold the principles and standing of Al-Azhar not just through statements, but through his character, knowledge, and actions. He particularly pointed to the Imam's defense of a moderate and wise approach to current affairs. Al-Tayyeb's significant contribution to fostering interfaith dialogue was also recognized, notably through the Document on Human Fraternity co-signed with Pope Francis in Abu Dhabi in 2019. This document underscores the belief that faith should inspire individuals to view others as brothers deserving of support and affection.

Anwar revealed that he had personally urged Al-Tayyeb to intensify efforts in strengthening Muslim unity and promoting values of compassion, mutual respect, and good coexistence. He stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation not only among Muslims but also between Muslims and non-Muslims within Malaysia. The Prime Minister views Al-Tayyeb as a key figure in promoting understanding and harmony in a complex world.
