Singer Syamel: Networking and Tech Skills Crucial for Artists Today

Malaysian singer Syamel asserts that the contemporary entertainment industry demands more than just musical talent; strong networking and public relations (PR) skills are now paramount for artists. He observes that today's artists compete not only with each other but also with rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence.

"This is all just to be the best. Personally, in this era, the most prominent singers are those with the best networks," Syamel told Utusan Malaysia. He stressed the need for robust relationships with media, fans, and industry collaborators, stating that PR skills must be prioritized. Unlike in the past, where a pleasant voice and a good song were sufficient, success now hinges on "networking and technological skills."

Syamel also highlighted the critical role of a supportive team behind an artist. He explained that navigating the competitive music industry, which he described as a "turbulent sea," requires a dedicated team to manage aspects like marketing, promotion, and image. Whether working independently or under a label, having a specialized team is essential for project success.

Reflecting on his career, Syamel recently released his debut album, 'Pertama,' after a 10-year journey. The album, featuring seven songs and collaborations with established and new producers, is a testament to his ballad genre preference, earning him the moniker 'raja galau' (king of melancholy). He revealed that advice from Universal Music, urging him to establish a career independent of his wife, fellow singer Ernie Zakri, motivated him to finally produce the album.
