Arab League urges Trump to curb Israeli violations toward Palestinians, warns of 'explosion'

The Arab League has implored U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene and curb Israeli policies toward Palestinians, warning that escalating tensions have brought the region to a critical "moment of explosion."

The situation in the region is heading toward a very dangerous point and is approaching a moment of explosion on more than one level.

Nabil Fahmy, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, issued a statement ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Fahmy attributed the current volatile state to the "deadlock facing the Palestinian issue" and what he described as "reckless escalation and brinkmanship policies" contributing to the Gulf crisis. He stressed that all parties share responsibility for regional security but singled out the U.S. administration for its crucial role.

The Israeli army killed more than 73,000 people and injured 174,000 others in a brutal offensive in Gaza since October 2023. Tel Aviv also escalated attacks in the occupied West Bank, killing nearly 1,200 Palestinians during the same period.

Fahmy specifically called on President Trump to "rein in the extremist ambitions of the Israeli government," which he accused of attempting to thwart the Sharm El-Sheikh peace initiative. He also urged Trump to halt repeated Israeli violations in East Jerusalem and put an end to attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The Arab League chief accused the Israeli government of aiming to "completely eliminate the Palestinian presence" through settlement expansion and displacement plans.

Furthermore, Fahmy advocated for a "swift return” to understandings between the U.S. and Iran, and the resumption of negotiations. The goal, he stated, is to end the conflict, restore regional stability, respect the sovereignty of neighboring countries, and ensure safe passage through vital waterways like the Gulf and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
