Argan Tree Hailed as Strategic Asset for Resilience in Arid Regions

In the coastal city of Essaouira, a significant round table discussion convened as part of the 8th International Argan Conference, shedding light on the multifaceted benefits of the Argan tree. Researchers and experts gathered under the theme “Argan cultivation, biotechnology, and genetic improvement” to underscore the tree's vital role in Morocco's ecological and economic landscape. Rashid Mintak, a researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Research, articulated the Argan tree’s status as a strategic asset for bolstering the resilience of arid and semi-arid zones.

The discussions powerfully reinforced the Argan tree's function as a cornerstone for safeguarding natural resources and biodiversity. Beyond its environmental significance, the tree is a crucial driver of socio-economic development for local communities, providing livelihoods and sustaining traditional practices. The conference emphasized the urgent need for modern, scientifically-grounded, and sustainable Argan cultivation methods. This approach is essential for confronting the escalating challenges posed by climate change, increasing human pressure on the land, and the tree's naturally slow regeneration rate.

Significant progress in Argan cultivation techniques was showcased, covering the entire production chain from planting to domestication. Research findings highlighted the pivotal impact of plant material quality on the success of afforestation programs and the rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems. Advances in nursery seedling production and the improvement of conditions for young plant growth were also key discussion points. Hespress notes the high-level patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI for this 8th International Argan Conference, which brings together approximately 500 researchers, experts, and industry professionals from Morocco and abroad. This event, organized in partnership with key national institutions, aims to foster scientific exchange and collaboration, celebrating the strategic importance of the Argan tree and its ecosystem, and showcasing advancements in research, cultivation, and the sustainable valorization of its derived products.
