Argentine Etcheverry and Spanish Bucsa Exit Washington Open in First Round

The Washington Open saw early exits for both Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Spain's Cristina Bucsa, as both players were eliminated in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday.

Etcheverry, ranked 31st in the ATP rankings, fell to American Brandon Nakashima, who is ranked 33rd. Nakashima secured a straight-sets victory with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in Etcheverry's debut appearance at the Washington event.

In the women's draw, Bucsa, ranked 40th, experienced a disappointing loss. After winning the first set against Uzbekistan's Polina Kudermetova (ranked 108th), Bucsa was unable to maintain her advantage. Kudermetova mounted a comeback, winning the second set in a tiebreak and then dominating the third set to take the match 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-0. This defeat marks Bucsa's first singles match win since Indian Wells in March.

The ATP and WTA 500 tournament in Washington serves as the kickoff for the North American hard-court swing. This series of tournaments will continue with the Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati before culminating in the US Open.
