Armed Herders Kill Seven in Benue Attack

The volatile situation in Nigeria's Benue State has once again turned deadly, with suspected armed herders reportedly killing at least seven people and injuring four others in an attack on the Channel One community. The incident, which occurred late Sunday night in Logo Local Government Area, has sent shockwaves through the region and displaced numerous residents who have fled their homes in fear of further violence.

It is alleged that the marauders are those camped at Shaor, one of the deserted villages that several intelligence reports have identified as a Fulani marauders’ camp in Logo LGA.

Eyewitness accounts describe the attackers as arriving in large numbers on motorcycles, armed with firearms, and engaging in sporadic shooting that forced residents to scatter. Community leaders have identified a possible Fulani marauders' camp in a deserted village as a base for the attackers, highlighting a pattern of cross-border incursions. The victims included several members of the same family, underscoring the brutal nature of the assault.

The community leader added, “It is also confirmed that some people whose names are not immediately mentioned sustained life-threatening injuries and have been hospitalised at different medical facilities in Anyiin town.

In response to the escalating violence, community leaders are appealing to both state and federal governments to intensify coordinated clearance operations along the borders. They are also calling for the establishment of joint inter-state security task forces involving Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states to monitor and block the routes used by these suspected mercenaries. The Nigeria Police Force has stated that a report was yet to be officially received, but the urgency of the situation demands immediate and decisive action to restore peace and security to the affected border communities.
