Athletics acquire former Uni-Lions pitcher Blewett from Cardinals

The Oakland Athletics have acquired pitcher Scott Blewett from the St. Louis Cardinals in a cash transaction. Blewett, 30, previously played in Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League for the Uni-Lions.

Blewett was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on July 23, just a day after he pitched two scoreless innings in relief against the Los Angeles Angels. Despite the solid outing, the Cardinals opted to move on. This season, Blewett appeared in 37 games in Triple-A, with two starts, accumulating a 4-1 record with six saves and a 5.18 ERA over 48.2 innings. He recorded 63 strikeouts.

MLB Trade Rumors noted that while Blewett isn't a flamethrower, his four-seam fastball velocity has increased this season. In the minor leagues, it averaged around 95 mph (152.9 kph), up from his career average of 93.2 mph (150 kph). With the Athletics' bullpen currently in need of arms, Blewett could see increased playing time if he performs well.

During his brief stint in Taiwan in 2023, Blewett pitched 41 innings over seven appearances for the Uni-Lions, posting a 3-3 record with a 3.95 ERA and 40 strikeouts. His FIP was 2.76 and his ERA+ was 94.
