Attacks on Wildberries warehouses seen as key to Russian defeat

Recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian Wildberries logistics centers are strategically disrupting a key e-commerce platform that has become a vital, albeit informal, supply channel for Russian troops. While Wildberries presents itself as a civilian enterprise serving millions of Russians, its role in equipping soldiers has made its infrastructure a legitimate target, according to analysts.

The Russian military's supply chain has faced numerous shortcomings, leading many units to rely on private purchases, volunteer aid, and crowdfunding. Wildberries has facilitated this by offering a vast array of military goods, including body armor, tactical helmets, and drone components. Although a dedicated "Special Military Operation" category was removed from the site after initial attacks, the items remain available through other sections.

Journalists highlight that strikes on these warehouses are militarily logical, aiming to cripple the informal supply network. The disruption extends beyond the company and its employees; it impacts small merchants who lose inventory and income. The psychological effect is also significant, as tens of millions of Russians use the platform, and millions more earn income as sellers. Videos of distressed entrepreneurs have flooded Russian social media following the warehouse fires.

Estimates suggest that Ukraine has already destroyed about 8% of Wildberries' total logistics capacity. Direct damages to the warehouses are pegged at around $400 million USD, with potential losses for sellers due to destroyed goods reaching an additional $2 billion USD. Russian authorities have largely downplayed the incidents in state-controlled media, though the Kremlin is reportedly considering financial aid for the company. The latest attack occurred on July 29, following earlier strikes on July 18, impacting facilities in regions like Ryazan.
