Attica, Boeotia, and Evia on 'Red Code' alert as winds strengthen

Three key regions in Greece, Attica, Boeotia, and Evia, are on high alert, designated as "Red Code" areas, as the country battles multiple wildfires for a third consecutive day. Authorities anticipate winds will strengthen on Sunday, further increasing the risk of fire ignition and spread in these already vulnerable areas.

The "Red Code" activation signifies the full mobilization of the National Civil Protection Mechanism. This involves deploying personnel, equipment, and operational resources to ensure maximum preparedness. Municipalities and regional authorities within the affected areas are instructed to convene emergency coordination meetings to synchronize efforts among all involved bodies.

The Fire Service has placed its personnel on general alert due to the numerous fires and adverse weather conditions. Aerial surveillance patrols and joint patrols involving fire, police, and military forces continue. Protective measures, including preemptive traffic bans in forests and high-risk zones, remain in effect.

Authorities are appealing to the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could ignite a fire, such as burning dry grass, using tools that create sparks, or having open-air barbecues. In case of a fire, citizens are urged to immediately notify the Fire Service and follow official instructions sent via the 112 emergency number.

Weather forecasts indicate generally clear skies across most of Greece on Sunday, but strong northerly winds will persist in the east, reaching up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea. Temperatures will remain high, reaching 34-36 degrees Celsius inland and up to 37 degrees locally in the west. In Attica, winds will blow from the north at 4-6 Beaufort, reaching 7 Beaufort in eastern parts of the region during the morning hours before weakening in the afternoon.
