August Begins with Suffocating Heat: Temperatures Rise to 39 Degrees, Tropical Nights Forecast

August is starting with a new episode of heatwave across Romania, as temperatures are set to climb as high as 39 degrees Celsius, particularly in the western parts of the country. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued orange and yellow code warnings for heatwaves, signaling a period of intense and uncomfortable weather for many regions.

The most severe heat is expected in the Western Plain, where temperatures could reach 39 degrees Celsius. Six counties – Timiș, Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare, Sălaj, and Maramureș – are under an orange code warning. In these areas, the heatwave will intensify, leading to exceptionally high thermal discomfort. The temperature-humidity index (ITU) is predicted to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units, and nighttime temperatures will likely remain between 20-24 degrees Celsius, indicating tropical nights.

A yellow code warning is in effect for several other regions, including southern and western Oltenia, southern Banat, most of Transylvania, and the northern half of Moldova. Here, temperatures will be notably high for early August, ranging between 33 and 37 degrees Celsius. The southern Banat and southwestern Transylvania regions are expected to see the highest values. In some of these areas, nights will also be tropical, with minimum temperatures generally between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.

The rest of the country will also experience warm weather, with increasing thermal discomfort. While the coast will see highs between 27 and 29 degrees, the west will approach 39 degrees. Exceptionally low temperatures are forecast for the Eastern Carpathian depressions, dropping to 8 degrees, while the Western Hills could see lows of 25 degrees. In Bucharest, the weather will remain warm with high thermal discomfort, the ITU nearing 80. Daytime temperatures will reach 33-34 degrees, with nighttime lows between 16 and 19 degrees.
