Augusto Cury Bets on Drones to Govern Brazil

Augusto Cury wants drones to become a tool of government across much of Brazil’s public policy. The psychiatrist, author and presidential candidate says they could support security, the economy, health, environmental protection and agribusiness.

His platform, filed with Brazil’s electoral authorities, mentions drones 19 times. In an interview with Rede Globo, Cury discussed using them to combat femicide. His proposals also include monitoring Brazil’s borders, fighting deforestation and responding to forest fires.

The plan offers few details about how the technology would be regulated or used in practice. In its section on Agriculture 4.0, however, it calls for incentives to help farmers of all sizes acquire the equipment. The platform says, "Precision agriculture: the use of satellites, drones, sensors, artificial intelligence and data analysis will allow greater productivity with less environmental impact. We will encourage the technological modernization of farms of all sizes."

Cury also promises to lead Brazil through a technological revolution by inviting countries including Israel and China to become strategic partners. He says China should be invited to "lead an axis of light mechanization, drones, automation, artificial intelligence, mini-plants, rural solar energy and affordable machines for small and medium-sized farmers."
