Avalanche on Broad Peak Kills Nirmal Purja and Nine Other Climbers in Pakistan

An avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan has claimed the lives of ten climbers, including the celebrated Nepalese-British extreme athlete Nirmal Purja. The tragic incident occurred earlier this week, with confirmation of the entire group's demise coming from Purja's company, Elite Expeditions, on Saturday.

Nirmal Purja, known for his record-breaking ascents, was among those lost in the disaster. His company stated that he "tragically lost his life after the avalanche on Broad Peak." Previously, the bodies of three other climbers had been recovered from the mountain.

Broad Peak, situated on the border between Pakistan and China, stands at 8,047 meters, making it the twelfth-highest mountain globally. It is widely regarded as a particularly challenging peak to ascend, with its first recorded climb by an Austrian expedition in 1957.

Rescue teams were deployed in the aftermath of the avalanche. The confirmation of all ten climbers' deaths marks a somber conclusion to the expedition on one of the world's most formidable mountains.
