Wildfires rage across Europe: 100 homes destroyed in Greece as firefighters battle blazes

Europe is grappling with persistent wildfires, with Greece facing a particularly challenging situation. Firefighters are engaged in a fierce battle against blazes across the country, forcing the evacuation of numerous villages, especially in the region west of Athens.

Near Porto Germeno, approximately 60 kilometers west of the capital, the fire has ravaged the area, with official reports indicating that around 100 homes have been destroyed. While the coastal guard successfully evacuated remaining residents by sea, they have been advised not to return to the coastal town. The struggle continues on the island of Crete as well, where firefighters are working to extinguish flare-ups, despite the main blaze being largely contained.

Strong winds are a significant concern, hampering firefighting efforts by preventing the deployment of water-dropping aircraft. "Due to the strong winds, no water-dropping planes can be used at the moment. We hope the wind subsides. There is no other option," a deputy mayor told Ertnews. Satellite images show the two active fire areas are substantial, each covering an area roughly equivalent to 5,000 football fields.

Investigations into the cause of the fires are underway, with damaged electricity pylons being considered a potential source. Meanwhile, in Turkey, the situation has largely improved, with authorities reporting that 258 out of 260 fires nationwide are under control. Although the fire danger remains high to very high in many parts of Greece, forecasts suggest a slight improvement in weather conditions and weakening winds.
