Nirmal Purja Among Mountaineers Lost in Broad Peak Avalanche

A devastating avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak has reportedly claimed the lives of several mountaineers, including the renowned Nirmal Purja. The incident occurred on Thursday as the expedition was attempting to summit the 8,047-meter peak, located at an altitude of approximately 6,600 meters.

The group comprised climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, China, the United States, and Oman. According to Naila Kiani of the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), tracking device data indicated that the mountaineers were swept several hundred meters down the slope by the powerful avalanche.

Rescue operations, involving high-altitude porters, rescue teams, and the Pakistani army, resumed on Saturday after being temporarily halted on Friday due to challenging weather conditions. The teams had spent the night at the base camp before recommencing the search.

Nirmal Purja, a Nepali-born alpinist holding British citizenship, was leading the expedition. He gained international fame in October 2019 for scaling all 14 eight-thousander peaks in a record seven months, a feat documented in the Netflix production '14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.' His record was later surpassed in August 2023 by a team of a Norwegian and a Nepali climber.
