This year, the usual congestion is compounded by wildfires across Southern Europe. While major blazes near Bordeaux and Madrid appear to be under control, VAB warns that local disruptions are still possible. The organization strongly advises against traveling on Saturdays, recommending Friday mornings or Mondays as alternatives for a smoother and more economical journey. Friday evenings are also discouraged.

To navigate the expected gridlock and potential wildfire-related issues, VAB offers several tips. Travelers are encouraged to use real-time traffic apps like Waze and specific wildfire alert apps such as 'Feux de Forêt' in France. Maintaining vehicles is crucial, with advice to ensure fuel or charge levels are adequate and windshield washer fluid is topped up, especially given the potential for soot and ash to reduce visibility.

In areas affected by smoke, VAB recommends activating the air recirculation function in vehicle ventilation systems to keep smoke out and purify the interior air. Additionally, travelers should carry sufficient water and potentially face masks. The organization also stresses the importance of not relying solely on digital navigation, suggesting a traditional paper map as a backup in case of power outages due to wildfires.
