Bagudu tasks LG chairmen on grassroots development initiatives

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, has underscored the critical role of local government chairmen in driving inclusive development and bolstering social protection at the grassroots. Minister Abubakar Bagudu, speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Abuja, stressed that these local leaders must take ownership of development initiatives within their jurisdictions to effectively combat poverty and enhance the living standards of citizens.

Local government chairmen, as the chief executives of their councils, must take ownership of development outcomes within their jurisdictions.

This directive comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen collaboration across all government tiers in delivering social protection. Bagudu referenced the Constitution, emphasizing the moral and legal obligations of public officials to prioritize citizen welfare and inclusion. He acknowledged the persistent economic hardships, insecurity, and market failures that undermine the livelihoods of many hardworking Nigerians, underscoring the necessity of robust social protection measures.

At the heart of governance in Nigeria is the achievement of the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as set out in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The minister also highlighted President Bola Tinubu's commitment to grassroots development under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting the approval of the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme. This initiative aims to map economic opportunities and development challenges at the ward level, promising improved governance and coordination. The engagement underscored that effective social protection requires a coordinated 'whole-of-government and whole-of-society' approach, involving all stakeholders from government bodies to community members.
