Bai Bing-bing tearfully remembers daughter Bai Hsiao-yen on 29th anniversary, calling her 'angel in my life'

As the Ghost Month approaches, Taiwanese celebrity Bai Bing-bing is once again commemorating her daughter, Bai Hsiao-yen, who was tragically abducted and murdered 29 years ago. Bai Bing-bing shared on social media that, as in previous years, she will attend Buddhist rituals at over ten temples. These ceremonies, including chanting, offerings, and prayers, are intended to help departed souls find a better rebirth.

Bai Bing-bing spoke about the profound impact her daughter's death had on her, describing Hsiao-yen's final moments as filled with "fear, terror, and humiliation." The tragedy plunged Bai Bing-bing into a deep depression for many years. However, she has since found a way to reframe her grief, stating, "I feel she is an angel in my life, because I have come to understand more empathy and gratitude."

Reflecting on her life journey, Bai Bing-bing recalled the difficult period after leaving an unhappy marriage 46 years ago. She returned to Taiwan with nothing and worked behind the scenes at歌厅 (singing halls) to save money for her daughter's birth. She described the early days of motherhood, from bathing and changing diapers to comforting a crying infant, as a period of learning and dedication.
