Bali Governor Demands Coordination with Customary Leaders for Batur Development

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has issued a directive requiring all development plans in the Batur area, Kintamani, Bangli, to be coordinated with local customary elders. This measure is intended to ensure that development aligns with the ancestral values deeply respected by the Batur customary community.

Every program planned in the area must first be coordinated with the customary elders of Batur. Thus, every development and activity can proceed in line with the values, beliefs, and customary order that have been passed down through generations.

Koster stressed that Batur is a vital source of Balinese civilization that must be protected. He instructed the head of the Bali Province BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Center) to foster synergy with the Bangli Regency Government and Batur customary leaders. This collaboration is crucial, as the Batur customary community holds significant influence over the region and remains strongly committed to its traditions.

The governor highlighted that Batur possesses not only captivating natural scenery but also collective memories of Bali's history. Preserving Batur, he stated, means safeguarding a link in the chain of civilization to ensure it remains alive and can be passed on to future generations. The 100th anniversary of the Batur Rarud (evacuation) following the 1926 Mount Batur eruption serves as a reminder of the area's historical significance.

Batur not only has captivating natural scenery but also holds collective memories of the journey of the Balinese people. Preserving Batur is not just about preserving a place, but about maintaining the chain of civilization so that it remains alive and can be passed on to the next generation.

Koster also emphasized the need to maintain a balance between economic activities and the spiritual sanctity of the Batur region. While acknowledging that Batur can be a source of livelihood, he cautioned against practices that could damage its sacredness or natural equilibrium. He urged for a clear separation between areas designated as sources of sanctity and those used for economic purposes, ensuring that development harmonizes with the environment and cultural heritage.
