Bangladesh Voter Roll Expands by Over 300,000 Ahead of Local Elections

Bangladesh's Election Commission has published an updated draft voter roll, showing a significant increase of 309,315 registered voters, bringing the total to 128,632,555. This expansion primarily includes citizens who have reached the age of 18 by July 31.

The updated roll is slated for use in the forthcoming local government elections, encompassing city corporations, district councils, upazila parishads, municipalities, and union parishads. The commission aims to finalize and publish the complete voter roll on August 31. Alongside the voter roll update, the EC has submitted draft codes of conduct for these local elections to the Ministry of Law for review.

In parallel, the Election Commission has initiated the process for the presidential election, scheduled for August 20. Nomination papers are now available for collection. Thus far, only the BNP has collected nomination papers, through its Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. No other political parties or candidates have yet sought nomination papers for the presidential race.
