Bangladeshi Women Return Home After Indian Jail Terms

Five Bangladeshi women have returned to their home country after completing three-year jail terms in India for illegal entry. Indian immigration police at Petrapole handed the women over to Benapole immigration authorities late last night.

According to police, the women hail from Narail, Tangail, and Bagerhat districts. They reportedly traveled to Mumbai through brokers over three years ago in search of employment. Indian police arrested them, and a Mumbai court subsequently sentenced them to three years in prison.

It feels very good to be back home after being released from prison.

After serving their sentences, the women were housed in a shelter run by a human rights organization. Special travel permits, facilitated by the authorities and embassies of both Bangladesh and India, were used for their repatriation. Following immigration procedures, they were transferred to the Benapole Port Police Station.

Justice and Care, a human rights organization, is now arranging for the women to be reunited with their families. One of the returnees, Shimu Akter, expressed her relief at being home, having been initially lured to India by brokers with false promises of work. Shariful Islam, a field officer with Justice and Care, stated that the women had fallen victim to fraud and would be reunited with their families today.
