Bayona documentary series ‘Beyond Society’ to premiere on December 18

Juan Antonio Bayona’s new documentary series about the 1972 Andes plane crash will premiere on Netflix on December 18.

“Beyond Society” follows Bayona’s 2024 film “Society of the Snow” and is directed by Carlos Torres. The three-episode production brings together previously unpublished testimony from survivors and from relatives of victims who died in the crash.

Much of the series was filmed at the crash site, where a large part of the film’s cast traveled to create “a unique encounter between reality and fiction,” Netflix said in a statement. The story begins with the Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972, in Argentine territory.

Sixteen of the 40 people aboard survived and spent 72 days in the snow waiting to be rescued. The documentary follows the survivors and victims’ relatives as they discuss how the crash shaped their lives and became a worldwide phenomenon that inspired numerous books and films.

The contributors include writers Piers Paul Read and Pablo Vierci, as well as filmmakers who brought the story to the screen, including Frank Marshall and Bayona himself. Bayona created the series with Torres and produced it with Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida.
