Bayreuth Festival Opens Amidst Controversy and Historical Reckoning

The 150th Bayreuth Festival has opened, marking a significant anniversary for the Richard Wagner festival. Artistic director Katharina Wagner and Jewish publicist Michel Friedman appeared together at the opening, seemingly having resolved a prior conflict. Wagner repeated her apology to Friedman, who had initially been invited to speak at a commemoration event about antisemitism and confronting the Nazi past, but whose invitation was later rescinded due to security concerns. Wagner subsequently reinstated the invitation, which Friedman accepted.

This year's festival aims to confront its past, with Wagner stating the event must "say no" to racism, chauvinism, and the trivialization of history. She emphasized the personal connection her family has to the Nazi regime, noting that the festival has never been detached from its historical context. The opening was attended by prominent political figures, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz, former Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder, alongside other government officials.

Chancellor Merz also addressed the festival's connection to the Nazi era and Wagner's own problematic views in his remarks.
