Beckford, Prince strike gold for Jamaica at Commonwealth Games

Jamaica celebrated a triumphant start to the track and field events at the Commonwealth Games, clinching two gold medals on the opening day in Glasgow, Scotland. Romaine Beckford made history by winning the first-ever men's high jump gold for Jamaica, while Demario Prince secured the nation's fourth consecutive title in the 110m hurdles.

Beckford soared to victory in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.25 meters. He edged out India's Sarvesh Anil Kushare, who also cleared the same height, with England's Kimani Kack taking bronze at 2.20m. This win marks a significant comeback for Beckford, who placed eighth four years prior and failed to clear a height at the previous year's World Athletics championships.

Minutes later, Prince delivered a stellar performance in the 110m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 13.17 seconds. He finished ahead of England's Samuel Bennett, who recorded a personal best of 13.30 seconds. Cyprus' Milan Trajkvoc secured the bronze medal with a season's best time of 12.32 seconds.
