Belgrade Pride: More LGBT+ people are gaining confidence to live openly and freely

Belgrade Pride Week has begun with a message of inclusion: “There is room for all of us.” The program runs through September 6 and includes events for LGBT+ people, allies and people who want to learn more about the community’s problems and challenges.

We succeeded in creating a program with content for LGBT+ people, allies, people who would like to learn about LGBT+ people, our problems and the challenges we face, and for different groups within our community.

Matija Stepanović of the Belgrade Pride organization said organizers had prepared a varied schedule. It includes cultural and artistic events, parties, lectures and exhibitions, with many activities taking place at KC Grad, which also serves as the Pride House.

A protest and Pride march are planned for Saturday. Stepanović said the week was intended not only for LGBT+ people, but for residents across the city and the country.

I think more and more LGBT+ people are becoming encouraged to live authentically and freely.

He said more LGBT+ people were becoming confident enough to live openly. For him, Pride is a rejection of pressure to hide or feel ashamed of one’s identity. “Pride is when we refuse to live like mice, and when we refuse to hide and be ashamed,” Stepanović said.
