Berlin attack was 'Islamist terrorist act,' German minister says

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has declared the attack in Berlin, where a man drove a car into a crowd and then attacked others with a knife, as an "Islamist terrorist act." The incident occurred in the Tiergarten park during a "Pride" event on Saturday evening.

The suspect, identified as Abdul B., is reportedly of German nationality with Lebanese roots. He is known to law enforcement for a significant criminal record, radicalization, and ties to Islamist circles. He had previously received a suspended sentence of one year and ten months, which the prosecution had appealed. The suspect has not yet been apprehended.

During the attack, 29 people were injured, some severely. The woman who died was killed during the initial car ramming. In response to the incident, Faeser announced that security concepts for major events would be reviewed. The government is already in discussions with federal states regarding potential security enhancements.
