Berlin Techno Parade Faces Heightened Security After Terror Attack

Berlin is preparing for the 'Rave the Planet' techno parade, a major event expected to draw tens of thousands of people to the Tiergarten area. This year's event proceeds under significantly heightened security precautions, a response to a recent Islamist terror attack that occurred just weeks prior near the Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations.

The parade, scheduled from 13:50 to 22:00 on the Straße des 17. Juni, will feature multiple music trucks and stages with an estimated 300 DJs performing. To manage the event and ensure public safety, around 1,500 police officers will be deployed. The police will also utilize helicopters and drones for surveillance and security. Access to certain areas within the Tiergarten will be restricted using bollards as part of a tiered security plan.

The increased security measures are a direct consequence of a van attack on July 25th. In that incident, an Islamist attacker drove into a crowd and then allegedly attacked bystanders with a machete, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to at least 31 others, some of them severe. The parade route passes in close proximity to the location where this tragic event unfolded, underscoring the heightened security concerns for the techno parade.
