Bersatu's future in Perlis looks bleak amid leadership exodus

The future of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu) in Perlis appears increasingly uncertain following a series of resignations by prominent leaders. The exodus has sparked questions about the party's stability and its prospects in the upcoming general election.

The wave of departures began with the resignations of State Chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah and State Executive Councilor Datin Marzita Mansor from Bersatu's Supreme Council. While both leaders retained their positions as State Chairman and Head of Perlis Srikandi Bersatu respectively, their move signals internal turmoil. Adding to the party's woes, State Secretary Azahar Hassan has officially left Bersatu to join Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan) and now leads the party in Perlis.

Internal conflicts and the action of dismissing Bersatu leaders before this became one of the root causes for the grassroots to start losing confidence in the party leadership.

Azahar cited internal conflicts and previous dismissals of Bersatu leaders as reasons for the grassroots losing faith in the party's top brass. Meanwhile, Abu Bakar's position as State Chairman is also precarious, with rumors of his potential dismissal circulating as a response to his Supreme Council resignation. Abu Bakar, who is also the State Assemblyman for Kuala Perlis, has deferred the decision on his fate to party President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Further complicating matters, another state executive councilor, Megat Hashirat Hassan, recently announced his resignation from the Arau Division Bersatu Committee, citing current party developments and careful consideration. Many of these departing leaders were considered key figures within Bersatu in Perlis. Their actions raise significant questions about Bersatu's ability to navigate the political landscape leading up to the 16th General Election (PRU16), especially given the party's past success in Perlis within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
