Biathlete Suvi Minkkinen Signs 12,000 Euro Cooperation Deal with Joutsa Municipality Amidst Council Disagreement

Biathlete Suvi Minkkinen will promote her home municipality of Joutsa under a new cooperation agreement for the 2026-27 season. The deal, valued at 12,000 euros, was approved by the Joutsa municipal council on August 24, though not without internal debate.

The agreement stipulates that Minkkinen will enhance Joutsa's visibility and participate in various cooperative events. She is also expected to contribute to the municipality's social media promotion efforts. Joutsa, a small community in Central Finland with just over 4,000 residents, is leveraging Minkkinen's profile to boost its public image.

The decision to approve the contract was not unanimous. A counter-proposal to reject the agreement was made, leading to a vote where the deal passed six to three. One member of the municipal council recorded a dissenting opinion, highlighting a division in the council regarding the financial commitment and the terms of the partnership.

Minkkinen, a product of the local club Joutsan Pommi, has achieved significant success in her sport. She won an Olympic bronze medal in the pursuit at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics and was part of the Finnish mixed relay team that finished sixth. She also secured a victory in the sprint event at a World Cup in Östersund and won mixed team relays in Oberhof and Nove Mesto with Tero Seppälä.
