Bill to establish TY Danjuma varsity in Taraba scales second reading

The Nigerian House of Representatives has advanced a bill to establish the Theophilus Danjuma Federal University of Agriculture and Solid Minerals in Jalingo, Taraba State. This move, which saw the bill pass its second reading, is viewed by lawmakers as a strategic imperative to bolster the nation's capacity in two vital sectors: agriculture and solid minerals.

This proposed institution is not merely an addition to the number of universities in Nigeria; it is a strategic intervention aimed at addressing critical gaps in our nation’s agricultural productivity, solid minerals development, and human capital advancement.

Sadiq Tafida, representing Jalingo, Yorro, and Zing Federal Constituency, led the debate, emphasizing that the university is designed to fill significant voids in specialized training, research, and innovation. He articulated that despite Nigeria's rich natural resources, the country continues to face challenges with food security, unemployment, and underutilization of its mineral wealth. Taraba State, with its fertile land and mineral deposits, is particularly well-positioned to benefit from such a specialized institution.

The proposed university is intended to be a center of excellence, focusing on modern agricultural techniques, sustainable mining practices, and fostering entrepreneurship among Nigerian youth. Lawmakers highlighted that enhancing these sectors is crucial for diversifying the economy away from oil dependency and achieving greater self-reliance. This initiative reflects a national aspiration to leverage Nigeria's endowments more effectively for economic growth and development, addressing long-standing issues through targeted educational and research interventions.
